You are only 5 minutes away from the creamiest 3 ingredient chocolate oatmeal you have ever had!

Who doesn’t love oatmeal? I know I do, and so do my picky eaters (a.k.a my toddler and husband). I also love chocolate. Well, “love” may not be the best word. It’s more like “adore.” Yes, I adore me some chocolate! Now put these two loves together into a 3 ingredient creamy chocolate oatmeal and I am in heaven.

A little backstory

These days it can be very difficult to get my toddler to eat pretty much anything. He also shares my love of both oatmeal and chocolate. Consequently, I have made countless bowls of chocolate oatmeal in a variety of ways over the last several months. I typically use some combination of cocoa powder, flavorings (vanilla, coconut), sweetener (dates, sugar, agave), and milk (usually soy) to give it some creaminess. I might even add peanut butter for extra creaminess and flavor.

Now don’t get me wrong. Oatmeal made in the previously described manner is totally delicious. However, it can take some time to gather all the ingredients, find the correct balance of flavors, etc. And when you have a hungry toddler losing his mind with every additional second it is taking you to make his oatmeal, you start to think, “is there any way I can make this faster but just as delicious?” Enter the 3 ingredient creamy chocolate oatmeal.

The Discovery

The other day, I had run out of the instant oatmeal packets I usually have on hand for my oatmeal-loving tot and was forced to make some stove-top oatmeal. Right before I was about to grab for the cocoa powder and the other ingredients I would need, I spotted something on the shelf that made me think. It was a container of Nutella. I wondered what would happen if I just made some old-fashioned oats with water and then added some Nutella with nothing else to sweeten or flavor it. So, I gave it a try.

Five minutes later, my eyes opened up wide when I took a spoonful of the most deliciously creamy, chocolate oatmeal I had ever tasted. I knew right then and there that this would be a go-to recipe for my household.

Keep in mind, I chose to use old-fashioned oats because that was what I had on hand. Also, I prefer the chewy texture and taste of the old-fashioned over quick oats. In this recipe, I used Bob’s Red Mill oats but another even higher quality option would be freshly milled oats from Honeyville! That being said, though, you could also use quick cooking oats and have a similar result in just one or two minutes.

How to Make the 3 Ingredient Creamy Chocolate Oatmeal

So to make this 3 ingredient creamy chocolate oatmeal all you have to do is throw some oats and water in a pot, add a little pinch of salt and put your stove on high. While it starts to heat up, spoon in about 2 Tablespoons of Nutella (more or less if you want it more or less sweet) and stir it together until the Nutella melts and the oatmeal comes to a boil. Turn down your stove to low and simmer the oatmeal for about 5 minutes until thick and creamy.

Note:

You can easily make this vegan if you swap out the Nutella with a vegan hazelnut or chocolate spread. A brand called The Date Lady (check Amazon) makes an awesome healthy and vegan alternative to Nutella that is made with just dates and other natural ingredients! I am sure it would be amazing in this recipe.

Finally, you could also choose to top this 3 ingredient creamy chocolate oatmeal with whatever else suits your taste buds. In the photo below I have topped it with some chopped chocolate. Some other topping ideas that would be delicious would be some fresh fruit, nuts, more nutella, or even peanut butter.
